Analysis of Horror Trailer for Narrative Theory

Vladimir Propp

The hero of the film 'Sinister' is the father, protecting his family from the supernatural horror within their new home, which is the villain. From watching the trailer, the donor seems the be the supernatural expert that is seen explaining to the father what is causing the unexplainable events happening in their home. The expert can also apply to the 'Dispatcher' and the 'Helper' aspects, telling the father how to resolve the matter.

Tzveten Tordorov

Equilibrium: The family has just moved into a new home, allowing them to start a fresh life in a new location.

Disequilibrium: The father uncovers what appears to be a supernatural spirit or demon within the house that puts his himself and his family at risk of dangerous possession.

Process: The father seeks help from experts in order to stop the unexplainable events from happening that are constantly jeopardising his family and his own life.

The 'New' equilibrium is unknown because as this is a trailer the aim is to only show the audience a preview, not spoiling the entire film. With this film being a horror, it is most likely that there is a major twist at the end of the story.

Five different codes

Action - a narrative device by which a resolution is produced through action, e.g. a shoot-out.

Enigma - a narrative device that teases the audience by presenting a puzzle or riddle to be solved. Works to delay the story's ending pleasurably.

Symbolic -  connotation

Semic (a sign) - denotation

Cultural - a narrative device which the audience can recognise as being part of a culture.

Golden Trailer Awards

The genre I will be looking for when I am producing my film trailer for A2 Media Studies will most likely be Horror. This is because I feel that this genre has more possibilities for me and my group to explore when shooting and editing, compared to the other genres in film. As shown in the previous post, the winner of the Golden Trailer Awards for Best Horror was 'The Devil Inside', produced by Paramount Pictures. This film trailer contains a lot of suspense in order to keep the viewer interested whilst also scared, depending on whether the viewer is a fan of horror films. Multiple still frames of scenes that take place later in the film are shown in order to show the extent of fear that the viewer may generate whilst watching the film whilst still not revealing too much and only previewing the basic storyline and what the film is all about. At the end of the trailer, most horror trailers show one last frame, still or very short; which will ineveitably be a scary scene from the film. This is done with this film trailer, showing the same still frame that was shown at the beginning, keeping the constant suspense ongoing and ending with the title 'Coming Soon'.
