Campaign for The Dark Knight Rises

During the final week before the release of 'The Dark Knight Rises', the YouTube channel of "warnerbrosuktrailers" changed their background theme to a poster of Batman and Bane from the film, focusing entirely on the film in order to attract as much attention and awareness as possible.

Compared to The Dark Knight released in 2008, 'The Dark Knight Rises' is very similar in terms of the way they advertise and market the film. However, in order to differentiate the TDKR from TDK, Warner Bros designed their posters in a different way, including much less colours and saturation apart from small features such as the belts shown on Batman and Catwoman, as well as the mask of Bane. They have included the usual aspects in order to keep consistency and to let the audience know that this is a Batman film, specifically a Christopher Nolan film, such as the mise en scene and the Batman insignia. It is clearly visible that the two different sets of posters displayed above and in their own way different simply because of the colouring, for the TDKR they have included much less colours than the blue tint which made the TDK iconic for the audience to recognise.

The two front covers shown above are 'two world-exclusive covers' released by the film magazine Empire, specifically for 'The Dark Knight Rises' which will later become collectable editions for fans of the brand. Batman is shown in a normal stance wearing his iconic gear that the audience is easily able to identify, strong, masculine and a fan favourite for many. Catwoman is displayed in a similar aspect, however, instead of a normal stance, she is displayed facing backwards, fully showing the back of her body. This is for what we know as the 'male gaze'; because she is showing her features, the front cover will attract the male audience of the film successfully, the Catwoman cover will also simply attract the female audience because instead of just a male superhero in the film there is also a female superhero fighting alongside him.

Codes and Conventions of Film Magazine Covers

This Total Film magazine issue features a basic front cover, providing an essential preview to the latest James Bond film entitled 'Skyfall' staring Daniel Craig who is the front cover model shown above.

The colour scheme of the front cover is gold/yellow, white and black, with the pug and additional buzzwords displayed in red in order to successfully attract the audience. This colour scheme of gold, white and black connotes danger in terms of a hazard sign warning. The key image is imposed over the masthead to let the audience know that the image is importantly linked to the main article that is 'Skyfall'. The model on the front cover is wearing a suit, connoting that he is important and possibly the main protagonist within the film. The model is also holding a gun, which connotes that the film could possibly be an action film. The gun also signifies enigma codes to attract the audience successfully. The headline is displayed directly in the centre of the front cover, connoting that it is the most important article within the magazine issue, where as the other articles are displayed around the main headline on the side of the front cover in smaller sizes.

This Empire magazine issues features a basic front cover, providing an 'ultimate' exclusive look at latest Batman film entitled 'The Dark Knight Rises' staring Christian Bale, who is the front cover model shown above.

The colour scheme of the front cover is mainly black and white in order to relate to the 'dark' knight rises, with other elements such as the masthead and additional buzzwords displayed in yellow and blue. The key image is imposed over the masthead to let the audience know that the image is importantly linked to the main article that is 'The Dark Knight Rises'. The model is holding a gun of some sort, connoting that this film is an action genre, signifies enigma codes to attract the audience successfully. The model is also shown wearing the famous Batman costume, telling us that this film will be a big superhero film that already has a very large audience of fans. This also connotes that because he is shown wearing the Batman costume, he will most definitely be the main protagonist, due to the film being about Batman.
